PART 2

Emma told herself she was imagining it.

People looked at each other in bars.

That was normal.

What wasn’t normal was the way she kept noticing him.

Every few minutes.

Against her better judgment.

Against years of discipline.

Against every rule she had built around her life.

The stranger remained at the far end of the bar, calm and self-contained, as if he had nowhere else to be.

As if the city outside did not exist.

As if time itself had slowed down.

Emma checked her phone again.

Three new emails.

Two missed calls.

One message from her assistant reminding her about tomorrow’s executive meeting.

She ignored them all.

For tonight, she wanted silence.

Then a voice beside her said,

"You’re reading the same email for twenty minutes."

She looked up.

The stranger had moved.

He now stood one stool away.

Close enough to speak.

Far enough to leave her an exit.

Emma raised an eyebrow.

"And you’ve been watching me long enough to know that?"

His mouth curved slightly.

"A fair point."

His voice was deeper than she expected.

Smooth.

Confident.

Dangerously easy to listen to.

"Do you always comment on strangers' work habits?" she asked.

"Only when they’re clearly miserable."

That earned the first genuine smile she’d given all week.

"Is it that obvious?"

"Only to someone equally miserable."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he extended his hand.

"Daniel."

She looked at it.

Then shook it.

"Emma."

His grip was warm.

Steady.

No attempt to impress.

No attempt to dominate.

Just a handshake.

Which somehow made it worse.

Because she found herself liking him instantly.

They talked.

Not deeply.

Not at first.

About New York.

About terrible coffee.

About impossible schedules.

About the strange loneliness of crowded cities.

Hours passed without either noticing.

The bar slowly emptied.

The music softened.

The rain began tapping against the windows outside.

For the first time in months, Emma forgot to watch the clock.

Forgot to be careful.

Forgot to be exhausted.

And somewhere between one conversation and the next, she realized she didn’t want the night to end.

That realization frightened her.

Enough that she stood.

"I should go."

Something flashed across Daniel’s face.

Disappointment.

Quickly hidden.

"Of course."

Emma reached for her coat.

Then paused.

Because Daniel suddenly looked amused.

"What?"

He nodded toward her phone.

"You’re getting calls."

She glanced at the screen.

Eight missed calls.

All from work.

Her stomach sank.

Tomorrow’s meeting.

The acquisition.

The board review.

The endless responsibilities waiting for her.

Reality had found her again.

Emma sighed.

"I was having such a good evening."

Daniel smiled.

"Me too."

The honesty of the answer caught her off guard.

Outside, the rain had become heavier.

The city shimmered beneath streetlights.

Daniel stood as she gathered her things.

"I can walk you to a cab."

"You don’t have to."

"I know."

There was something surprisingly old-fashioned about him.

Not controlling.

Protective.

The distinction mattered.

Together they stepped into the lobby.

The elegant marble floors reflected the chandelier light above them.

A doorman hurried forward.

Then abruptly froze.

His eyes widened.

Not at Emma.

At Daniel.

"Good evening, sir."

The man’s posture instantly straightened.

Respect.

No.

More than respect.

Recognition.

Emma noticed it immediately.

So did Daniel.

For the first time all night, he seemed uncomfortable.

"You know him?" Emma asked.

The doorman answered before Daniel could.

"Of course, Miss."

A brief silence followed.

Then the doorman added,

"Everyone knows Mr. Blackwood."

Emma blinked.

The name hit her like a spark.

Blackwood.

As in Blackwood International.

As in the multi-billion-dollar corporation currently dominating financial headlines.

As in tomorrow’s meeting.

Her meeting.

Slowly, very slowly, she turned toward Daniel.

His expression suggested he already knew exactly what she was thinking.

"You didn’t mention your last name."

"You didn’t ask."

Emma stared.

"You own Blackwood International."

Daniel sighed.

"Technically."

Her heart nearly stopped.

Because tomorrow morning she wasn’t meeting a stranger from a bar.

She wasn’t meeting Daniel.

She was presenting a legal strategy to the billionaire CEO whose company had just acquired hers.

And somehow…

She had spent the entire night arguing with him, laughing with him, and forgetting he existed.

Daniel studied her face.

"You’re not quitting before the meeting, are you?"

Despite everything, Emma laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind she hadn’t heard from herself in a very long time.

"No."

"Good."

The rain continued falling outside.

Neither moved.

Neither seemed ready to leave.

And for the first time, Emma wondered whether the most important moment of her career had actually started the night before.

In a quiet bar.

With a stranger who had looked at her like the rest of the room had disappeared.

To be continued…
